| | I have been fascinated with the concept of microlending ever since I heard about Muhammad Yunus and his nobel-prize winning Grameen Bank. Maybe it's just because I am disillusioned with traditional charity and this is something new, but I have decided to get involved.
Kiva.org does person-to-person microloans to people in 3rd world countries. There is no interest rate for this particular microloan program so it is entirely non-profit, but the chances of getting all your money back are typically very good.
I loaned a woman in Tajikistan some money to buy some cows to raise. It beats giving a hobo $5 and worrying if he is going to buy crack with it. Not that you should never give money to hobos, but they are unlikely to start a business with it.
Kiva sells gift certificates. I'm considering getting a few when Christmas rolls around. |
